Right to Buy

Abolition of the Right to Buy and Associated Rights (Wales) Act 2018

As you may be aware, four Local Authorities in Wales currently have a Right To Buy suspension in place and Denbighshire is one of these areas. Our suspension was granted from 18th November 2016 for 5 years. We wrote to all qualifying Denbighshire County Council tenants in March 2016 regarding our intention to do this.

Further to this suspension, I am writing to let you know that the Abolition of the Right to Buy and Associated Rights (Wales) Act 2018 gained Royal Assent on 24 January 2018.

This means that the Right to Buy a council property in Wales will end on 26th January 2019 and for any new tenancy from 24th March 2018. Our suspension remains in place until this time. The effect of this new legislation is that the Right To Buy no longer exists in Denbighshire.

Welsh Government has produced a document called “Information about the end of the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire in Wales”. A copy is available on denbighshire.gov.uk and also the Welsh Government website. If you would like a copy, we would be happy to send you a copy on request in either English or Welsh.

Please note that any reference to “Denbighshire Housing” means “Denbighshire County Council”.

If you need any further information regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.
